Trims

A farrier doesn’t just trim hooves; they shape them to keep your horse moving comfortably and correctly. Skipping trims can cause hoof chipping, infections, or even serious conditions like laminitis. Plus, if your horse is moving funny or seems sore, an overgrown hoof could be the culprit.

So, do your horse (and yourself) a favor—call the farrier. A quick trim now can prevent costly vet bills and long-term damage down the road!

Standard Shoeing

Wild horses don’t need shoes because they naturally wear their hooves down over miles of varied terrain, and only the toughest hooves survive. Domesticated horses, however, often need shoes for protection and support. Horses working on hard or rocky ground can wear their hooves down too quickly, leading to cracks and soreness. Some have naturally weak hooves or thin soles that make them prone to lameness. Performance horses benefit from added traction and shock absorption, while those with hoof issues may need corrective shoeing. If your horse is chipping, sore, or struggling on certain terrain, it’s time to call the farrier.

Hot Shoeing

Hot shoeing, or hot fitting, might look intense, but it doesn’t hurt the horse. The outer part of a hoof is made of keratin—the same material as your fingernails—so the horse doesn’t feel pain. When the hot shoe briefly touches the hoof, it creates a quick burst of steam and a slight burning smell, but no nerve endings are affected.

The benefits of hot shoeing make it worth considering. The heat allows the shoe to be shaped perfectly to the hoof, ensuring a better fit and reducing gaps that could trap debris. It also slightly seals the hoof wall, preventing cracking and splitting. A well-fit shoe means better support, improved durability, and fewer hoof issues down the line. If your farrier suggests it, hot shoeing can help keep your horse sound and comfortable.

Corrective Shoes

Regular therapeutic shoeing will alleviate the symptoms conditions such as club footedness seen here. It can improve the quality of the life for the horse.
